Strengthen Our Sisters
The Female Empowerment Movement (F.E.M.) at Pascack Hills currently has an online store open to raise money for the charity, Strengthen Our Sisters (S.O.S). They are selling clothing items such as crewnecks, shorts, and tank tops to raise money for women that facing homelessness, domestic violence, and poverty.
Hills English teacher Alexandra Pfleging is the advisor of the club. She discussed her reasoning behind supporting this charity.
“I did some research about local shelters, and found Strengthen Our Sisters. It was the first shelter for battered women in North America. In reading the history of the organization, I knew that this would be a group I wanted to help,” she said.
Specifically, the idea came from a tradition set by former principal, Glenn deMarrais.
“When I started teaching at Hills, Mr. deMarrais always promoted wearing Hills clothing on Fridays. After the hybrid schedule last year, a large portion of students missed out on this tradition. I am hoping that students purchase shirts to wear on Fridays to continue this tradition,” Pfleging commented.
Allanah Mednard is a Hills junior and Philanthropy Chair for F.E.M. She also talked about the idea to donate to Strengthen Our Sisters.
“Dr. Pfleging took inspiration from the Hills sweater she wore, and thought, ‘why not make something out of it,’” she said.
Pfleging also said that she wants to contribute more to S.O.S.
“We would like to volunteer at S.O.S. This would not only be an eye-opening and important experience for the young women involved in F.E.M, but also for me personally,” she said.
Jane Conboy is a Spanish and French teacher at Hills. She is looking forward to supporting the cause through F.E.M’s fundraiser.
“I am happy to support this fundraiser! It is so important for us to support each other in doing service for something that is bigger than ourselves. I love that the proceeds will go to help women rebuild a safe and healthy life for themselves and their families,” she said.
