5 Things You Need To Know

When it comes to what is going on in the news, there are a few topics that everyone should be familiar with. Here is a list of five current events and terms that will make you more knowledgeable about current events.

1. Ferguson Ruling

The grand jury for the case involving the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson recently came to a decision. They did not indict Darren Wilson (the officer who shot Michael Brown) of any crimes involving Michael Brown’s death. Following the announcement of the decision, riots broke out in Ferguson, and protests began in several other cities.

2. Philae Comet Landing

On November 12th, the lander Philae completed the first ever comet landing when it touched down on a comet 317 million miles away from Earth. Philae’s journey to the comet was 10 years and 4 billion miles long. Although there were some hiccups with the mission, Philae successfully landed and had enough time to run some tests and send data back to Earth.

3. Obama’s Executive Action on Immigration

President Obama recently signed an executive memorandum on immigration. This memorandum allows many immigrants who would have previously been at risk of being immediately deported to no longer be at such risk. The memorandum also calls for a task force to help implement this change.

4. Boko Haram School Bombing

Boko Haram, an Islamic terrorist group based in northeast Nigeria, bombed a high school in Northern Nigeria on November 10th. This particular attack killed at least 48 students and wounded 79 others. Boko Haram has been terrorizing Nigeria recently and is the same group responsible for the kidnapping of 200 schoolgirls last April.

5. Peter Kassig ISIS Beheading

On November 16th, ISIS released a video showing the beheaded Peter Kassig. Born and raised in Indiana, Kassig served in the military as a U.S. Army Ranger until he received a medical discharge. Kassig was captured on October 1st, 2013 while he was doing humanitarian work in Syria. ISIS held him hostage for a year before they killed him.
