While the audience did not know the winners prior to each presentation, the biggest surprise of the night was Taylor Swift announcing that she will be releasing a new studio album. During her acceptance speech for “Video of the Year”, she told the audience that her upcoming album, “Midnights,” will be released on Oct. 21.
It is about the story of thirteen sleepless nights Swift experienced throughout her life. This announcement opposed to one about re-recording one of her previous albums has made many Swift fans, or Swifties, shocked. As if the news of Swift being the first artist ever to win three VMAs for “Video of the Year,” wasn’t enough, this certainly made the night for swifties everywhere.
Between artists from different genres and pasts being given the chance to be awarded for their work to Swift’s announcement, the 39th annual MTV VMAs was certainly a night to remember.
