As students have well-settled into the new school year, Hills has welcomed two new clubs, offering students fresh opportunities to get involved in the school community.
Clubs have played a key role in student life here at Hills for years now. From learning how to build robots to performing community service, clubs have been spaces where students learn, get engaged, pursue their interests, and make a difference. This year, two new organizations joined the over 40 existing clubs at school: the Women in Business Club and the Black Student Union.
Women in Business Club
The Women in Business Club is led by junior Taleen Stephans. Aspiring to major in business in the future, Stephans noticed that there were no clubs focused on engaging female students in the business world. Because of this, she decided to start the Women in Business Club to fill that gap. This club is open to any student interested in learning about business and interacting with women in the business field. Stephans plans to hold meetings during lunch and invite guest speakers with experience in the industry who can serve as mentors and talk to students about their jobs and career paths.
On the club, Stephans said, “I think this will help students gain more of an understanding about the different career paths possible in the business field and spark not only meaningful conversation and discussions but networking and mentoring for the students at Hills.”
Black Student Union
The Black Student Union is led by sophomore Makenzie Wright and senior Josh Wright. The siblings were inspired by personal experiences and their missions to create a welcoming space for students at school. The BSU hopes to engage people, regardless of their background, through outreach, spreading awareness, educating students on black history, and celebrating black culture. Like other culture clubs at school, the Black Student Union has the goal of unity, community, and being a safe group where students can express their thoughts and opinions. The BSU has meetings every Monday at lunch.
“I am really excited for the year to come. We plan on having a bake sale next Tuesday, Oct. 29, to raise funds for the club. We also plan on holding movie nights, discussions, inviting speakers, and creating other opportunities as the year goes by,” said Makenzie Wright.
As these new clubs begin to establish themselves, one commonality they share is their spirit of community and making a change for Hills students.
