Over the past two months, the girls volleyball team has been vigorously working towards ending their season strong. One Pascack Hills senior in particular made quite the breakthrough.
On Oct. 11, in the game against Ridgefield Park, Mikka Jarvis set a new record, being the first student in Hills volleyball history to reach 1,000 assists. Her efforts helped lead the Broncos to a program sweep victory.
Jarvis joined the volleyball team during her freshman year. She is now the setter and captain of the varsity team.
The Trailblazer conducted an interview with Jarvis to discuss this momentous achievement.
Sam Goldstein: How does it feel to be the first in Hills’ volleyball history to reach a career total of 1,000 assists?
Mikka Jarvis: I’m still in shock. I’ve been stalking my own stats, waiting to reach that total of 1,000, but I had no idea that nobody else had reached it yet.
SG: What inspired you to pursue volleyball, and how did you get started with the sport?
MJ: I first started volleyball because I wanted to be on a team with my older sister, Dasia. I was always dragged along to her all-day club tournaments. The more I watched her play, the more I realized how badly I wanted to play, too. I tried out for the middle school team in sixth grade, and when Dasia and I found out I made it we were both ecstatic.
SG: Were there any memorable games or moments that stand out in your journey to 1,000 assists?
MJ: The most memorable game for me this season was probably against Paramus, our senior night. That’s when it finally hit me—this is my fourth and final year on this team, and I don’t know what I’ll do when it’s over.
SG: Who has been your biggest support system throughout your volleyball career?
MJ: Definitely my mom, who has been obsessed with watching me play since I was little. Even at that middle school level, where there isn’t exactly a lot of action, she was always genuinely excited to cheer me on.
