Dig Pink is an annual fundraiser that Hills does each October to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research during breast cancer awareness month. This year it is taking place on Oct. 29, so come out and support the Broncos as they play for an amazing cause.
The annual fundraiser happens in October every year for breast cancer awareness and to raise money for the Side Out Foundation. Dig Pink was brought to Hills 17 years ago by Daryl Palmer, a mother in the community. When asked how Dig Pink was brought to hills, Head Varsity Volleyball coach, Lindsay Runge said, “Your school can choose to participate in Dig Pink, and it is a worldwide event.” Pascack Hills is not the only school that has this amazing tradition. We are part of something bigger, so that we really can make a difference.
Each year rivals, Hills and Valley, face each other in the game. Both schools contribute to the earnings that are sent to Side Out. Runge says that the team’s motivation comes from the passing of Daryl Palmer. Daryl passed away from cancer, and it was just a catalyst to make the girls want to raise even more money for the cause. Over the years, Hills “is close to raising $70,000,” and “they are one of the top schools with donations,” said Runge. Because of Hills’ contributions to the Side Out Foundation, they were able to do a specific study that allowed significant advancements in their cancer research. This is motivation for the team and the community to keep the tradition going. It shows that our efforts matter, and our school can bring change.
Dig Pink is a special event for the Hills community, especially the volleyball team. The team and Teens Against Cancer Club decorate both the gym and school in pink to get everyone in spirit. The team also wears pink shoe laces, socks, and other accessories to support the cause while they play. Runge mentioned that her favorite part of Dig Pink is seeing the community come together for a great cause, and that there’s always a bonus of winning, but she wants to make sure her players know what they are trying to win for.
Lastly, the key message that Coach Runge wants the players and audience to take away from Dig Pink is to find a way to come together and support others even by doing daily activities. Come out to support breast cancer and the Broncos for the Dig Pink event this Wednesday 10/29. Buy your Dig Pink tee shirts, and enjoy an exciting volleyball match!
