Many people struggle during the winter months with the stresses of everyday life, and the cold, dreary weather only makes it worse. During the winter, it is often difficult to pick up our moods with the heavy workloads and the grey snow outside. Now that spring weather is approaching, positive and hopeful emotions arise with it. After a long, cold winter, seeing the trees sprout and the flowers bloom can greatly impact moods and productivity. It seems as spring changes nature and colors, along comes the spring change in people too!
Although many of the negative emotions during winter are temporary and may not seem like a serious issue, some people experience the real effect of something called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The New York Times states, “Seasonal affective disorder, or SAD — a type of depression that occurs with the changing of the seasons — can affect up to 10 percent of people in the United States, depending on where they live.” This disorder can be a real issue for many people, which is often mistaken for being the “winter blues,” but has a real underlying problem beneath it. This type of depression is linked to shorter days and less sunlight, leading to a more difficult daily reality.
Contrasting these dreary days of winter, the arrival of spring brings longer days and more sunshine, leaving a positive effect on the brain.
During the spring, there are increasingly more days full of sunlight and Vitamin D. These days filled with sunshine help our bodies produce this vital vitamin, which is important for our mood and energy levels during the day. Another positive effect of sunlight is increased serotonin, a chemical in our brain that makes us feel happy and calm. In addition, the overall warmer temperatures encourage people to go outside more often and be more active, another mood booster. Lastly, the simple beauty of nature is always uplifting. As the seasons change, we go from everyday lives filled with rain and cold to the fresh colors and smells of spring that exude positivity along with it.
Many different activities and hobbies are worth trying during the spring to help boost your own mood. Here are a few ideas for the warmer weather:
Hike or bike ride: There are so many great parks in the area perfect for reducing stress and bringing friends. Such as Wood Dale, Huff pond, or Van Saun county park.
Planting a garden: You don’t have to be experienced or even have much space in your yard to plant your garden. This garden can be as small as you need. All you need is some fresh soil and seeds. Watching your very own plants grow can be a fun and rewarding experience in the end in addition to being a great way to get outdoors!
Have a Picnic: It can be a great idea to pack a lunch or dinner and enjoy it in a park during the day or even during sunset with some friends or family!!
Play Outdoor Sports: Start to learn a new sport, whether it be something you are interested in or just another hobby for fun. Some sports great for the spring are soccer, basketball, lacrosse, pickleball, and tennis. Getting outside and moving is a classic fact known for being a mood booster.
Take a Walk: Something as simple as taking a walk down the block can help your mood. Just breathing in the fresh air and being in the sunlight can make a big difference.
Spring is the perfect time to try new things and have fun outside. By getting outside, being active, and enjoying the changes in season, you can make the most of your time and say goodbye to the drab winter!
