1. Tim Cook’s Coming Out
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, publicly announced that he was gay on October 30th. Cook is the first CEO of a Fortune 500 company to ever do this. Because he is the head of such an enormous and successful company, his “coming out” event was extremely influential.
2. Sayreville
Many players on the Sayreville High School football team were accused of hazing freshmen players in what were regarded as violent and inappropriate ways. As a result of this, the superintendent of the district canceled the rest of the football season, setting a public example of a no tolerance policy for hazing.
3. Midterm Elections
The midterm elections were on Tuesday, November 4th. These elections were particularly important because they decided whether the majority of the Senate would stay Democratic, or shift to Republican. The Senate ended up shifting to a Republican majority, and now for the first time in many years, Republicans have control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.
4. Ebola Quarantines
With the arrival of Ebola in the U.S., concerns over the spread of the disease have grown. This led to the quarantining of people who were suspected of having Ebola. Some of the people who were quarantined asked to be released; however, they were not allowed to leave, leading to much uproar as well as some threatened lawsuits in the nation.
5. Eric Frein Caught
Eric Frein, the man who shot at two Pennsylvania state troopers, killing one and wounding the other, was caught on October 30th. He, whose sole intention was to kill law enforcement officers, hid out in the woods after the shooting and was finally found after a 48-day manhunt.
