Trailblazer announces 2022-23 editorial staff
New positions have been added alongside current ones, such as assistant editors for certain sections and a staff publicist.
On May 9, the Trailblazer announced its editorial staff for the 2022-23 school year. New positions have been added alongside current ones, such as assistant editors for certain sections and a staff publicist.
The School News, Sports, and Arts & Entertainment sections will have assistant editors next year. All three of them are new to the editorial staff; Olivia Ge, Ethan Kaufman, and Jordan Brief will help edit these sections, respectively.
Ge, an incoming junior, joined the Trailblazer staff her freshman year. This past year, she has learned more about the School News section and covering Board of Education meetings
“I’m really looking forward to continuing my involvement,” said Ge.
In addition to being the Assistant School News Editor, she will be an editor for the Sports section.
“I want to tell the inspiring stories of our athletes, coaches, and overall tenacity [for the Sports section] and keep students and other readers informed about Pascack Hills [for the School News section],” she added.
Incoming senior Dylan Cochin will be the other editor for the Sports section. She joined the Trailblazer her sophomore year and edited for the College Corner section her junior year.
“I’m excited to work with everyone and get to meet new people,” she said, “Of course, I’m excited to edit and read other people’s articles as well.”
Kaufman, a rising senior, will be the Assistant Sports Editor and an editor for the Arts & Entertainment section. He wrote for the latter section a few times his freshman year, but became more involved his junior year.
“I hope that as an editor, I can learn some different techniques for attracting a broader range of readers to that content,” he said.
Brief, another rising senior, joined the publication her junior year, both contributing by writing articles and being a host on Bronco’s Breakdown, the broadcast program that was previously known as Pascack Recap.
As an editor, Brief’s main goal is to “inspire others to be passionate about journalism and to try new things.”
Incoming senior Saya Ross was appointed as a College Corner Editor last year, and will be in charge of helping manage the publication’s website, social media, and press releases. She is looking forward to “working within the community of editors and writers” during her last year at Hills.
Kaitlyn Verde has also learned how to cover BOE meetings alongside Ge, and will take on the School News section as an editor for her junior year. She joined the Trailblazer her freshman year and was selected as an Arts & Entertainment Editor last year, making the upcoming year her second on the editorial board.
“I am excited to explore the School News section and inform others about all the exciting happenings both in and out of Hills,” she said.
Last year, the Trailblazer formally created its newest section, Hills Life, which will be edited by rising junior Bethany Chen. She joined the publication her sophomore year, making the upcoming year her first on the editorial board.
“As the editor for Hills Life, I am determined to keep readers updated on everything happening at Hills throughout the year,” she said, “I cannot wait to see all the stories that fill the halls at our school this upcoming year.”
Rily Alexander is one of the newest members to the Trailblazer editorial staff. She wrote horoscopes for the publication her freshman year and will be an Arts & Entertainment Editor alongside Kaufman for her sophomore year.
She said that she is most looking forward to “being involved with all the other editors and writers” and has goals to consistently update the section and keep in touch with her assigned writers.
Joining Brief as an editor for the College Corner section is rising senior Sabrina Moe, who joined the Trailblazer her sophomore year and became an In-Depth Editor her junior year. She discussed her plans for the section.
“A few goals I have are to write articles more consistently for College Corner. I also want to try to expand the section to cover topics more involved in life after high school in general. I hope that this can help inform more people about college and life after high school,” she said.
The new In-Depth Editors for the 2022-23 school year are Julia Bang and Paige Geanopulos.
Bang joined the publication her freshman year and edited for the Life & Style section her sophomore year. She shared her thoughts on editing for In-Depth this upcoming year.
“I’m most excited to delve into journalism on a deeper level with this section, taking on heavier content and more complex writing opportunities,” she said.
Geanopulos is a rising sophomore and primarily wrote for In-Depth throughout her freshman year. This will be her first year on the editorial staff.
“I am looking forward to learning and writing more,” she said, “I am especially excited to edit and read the articles under the section as one of the editors.”
Sam Goldstein and Rebecca Lovett will be the editors for the Life & Style section.
Goldstein joined the Trailblazer his freshman year; this year being his first on the editorial staff.
“I’m looking forward to writing more articles and collaborating with my peers. I want to make sure that I can make my section the best it could possibly be,” he said.
Lovett edited for the section her junior year after joining the publication her sophomore year.
“I am so excited to continue spreading knowledge and the passions that I love to others in the community,” she said.
Two final editors for the Trailblazer are Anabelle Joukhadarian and Madison Saks, who will edit for the Opinion section for their second year. Respectively, they joined the staff their freshman and sophomore years, both editing for Opinion after one year of writing.
“I am looking forward to writing articles that will interest the Hills community and make them want to read about the topics under the Opinion section,” Joulhadarian said.
Saks added that she is excited, “to continue my role as Opinion editor and getting new staff writers to mentor.”
Among the editorial staff, Briana Keenan, rising senior, will be the publication’s Editor-in-Chief next school year. She has been a member of the Trailblazer since her freshman year and most recently held the position of School News Editor.
Each of these positions will be taken into effect over the summer. For the remainder of the 2021-22 year, the new editorial staff will work with current editors to transition into their respective roles.
Briana Keenan is a senior at Hills. She joined the Trailblazer her freshman year as a staff writer and edited for the In-Depth and School News sections her sophomore and junior years, respectively. This year, Keenan is looking forward to being the publication's Editor-in-Chief and continuing to write, edit, and manage stories for the Hills community.
Fun fact: Over the summer, Keenan went to the School of the New York Times for two weeks.
