An overview of the hybrid schedule.

In the midst of a pandemic, the school year is finally upon us. Lockdown restrictions have been loosened, and many have to adjust to this “new normal.” Thousands of schools across the country are beginning the school year with a hybrid schedule –– part in-person, part virtual –– in an effort to allow students to interact with each other and their teachers while maintaining safety protocols. Pascack Hills students are trying to navigate and adjust to the new schedule, yet as many challenges arise, confusion spreads. To aid those who are overwhelmed and looking for guidance, here are some methods that can help ease this chaos:

Maintain a routine

Although it may sound self-evident, following a routine is an amazing method for helping students stay on top of their new, adjusted schedules.

Sophomore Trayee Jha stated that “[t]he way I manage stress is first of all not procrastinating and second of all, staying in the same routine whether I’m in-person or fully remote.”

Whether one is fully remote or under the hybrid schedule, managing schoolwork, clubs, and personal activities can be stressful. If a person consistently dedicates a portion of their day to accomplish their responsibilities, they prevent unnecessary stress caused by procrastination.

Use planners and binders

As the school year progresses, it is inevitable that students will gradually receive a larger workload. Staying organized with traditional or online folders can aid in reducing unnecessary stress. By keeping track of one’s papers and documents, they will find that the stress of finding vital school materials will not be difficult in the slightest.

Writing down assignments and upcoming assessments can allow students to prepare academically in a timely manner. Club dates, Google Meet links, and other important information can be recorded in a designated planner. Utilizing a calendar, Post-it Notes, or a traditional planner are great ways to track schoolwork and reduce stress.

Stay connected

Maintaining a strong relationship with teachers and peers is always vital in having a successful school year. However, because of new precautions put into place to prevent the spread of Covid-19, growing these connections will be tremendously difficult –– especially for those who are fully online.

Joining clubs and staying active within the school has always been an easy way to build bonds between students, teachers, and peers. Fortunately, most clubs are utilizing virtual meetings to conduct their activities. Therefore, there is still a way to participate in activities with others outside of a classroom setting. Even by joining just one or two clubs or playing a sport, collaborating and having conversations with others who have similar interests can be tremendously beneficial in many aspects.

Take a break

During this unusual time, it is crucial to take care of one’s mental health. Though some may thrive on the stress and pressure the hybrid schedule creates, it is important to take a break! Constantly absorbing information without resting is not a beneficial or productive way to study and learn. Whether it is exercising, playing games, or going for a walk, relaxing and disconnecting yourself from school is vital.

Hopefully, these methods and tips will help you in reducing your stress and possible negativity caused by the new schedule. Good luck!
