5 Things You Need To Know
When it comes to what is going on in the news, there are a few topics that everyone should be familiar with. Here is a list of five current events and terms that will make you more knowledgeable about current events.
1. ISIS Burning
ISIS recently executed a Jordanian pilot by lighting him on fire. After a video of this was released, Jordan executed two Al Qaida prisoners in retribution for the Pilot’s death.
2. Chapel Hill Shootings
On February 10th, 2015, Craig Steven Hicks shot and killed three UNC students who were living in same apartment complex as him. Hicks later turned himself in to the police. Because all three victims were Muslim and Hicks had complained about Christians, Muslims, and religion in general on social media, police are investigating as if this were a hate crime.
3. Metro North Train Crash
On Tuesday, February 3rd, a Metro North train hit an SUV that was sitting on the tracks. The accident killed 6 people and injured 15. One of the injured train passengers had filed notice that he will sue the railroad, the state, and the MTA.
4. Net Neutrality Ruling
On February 27th, the FCC ruled to treat broadband Internet service as a public utility, allowing them to stop Internet providers from charging websites extra for a faster connection and limiting the service and speed to non-paying websites.
5. GMO Apple
The USDA recently approved the planting of a genetically modified apple. A Canadian company modified the apple to not contain an enzyme that caused browning when the apple is cut or bruised. These apples will be labeled as “Arctic Granny” or “Arctic Golden”.
