The posters in the hallway are hard to miss: Words colored in with rainbows promoting equality for all students. These posters were made by GSA, or Gay-Straight Alliance, a club that helps give representation to the LGBTQ+ population at the school. But, what is GSA exactly and what does it mean to Hills?

The club’s main purpose is to create an accepting atmosphere in the school for students of all races, religions, sexual orientations, and backgrounds. This is evident from some of the posters in the hallways. However, the majority of the student population doesn’t really know what goes on at the club meetings, and what GSA is really about.

Jamie Marootian-Miller, who runs GSA, spoke briefly about what GSA represents. She said, “Your Pascack Hills Gay-Straight Alliance exists because unkindness shouldn’t be a thing. The GSA is a safe space for friends and friends of friends to support one another regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.”

Sexuality is often a touchy topic to discuss, especially for high school students who fear judgement from their peers. This is part of the reason why GSA is a club; to make teens feel welcome at their school and with their friends and to ensure that no one experiences any discrimination or hate because of their differences.

Sophomore Gabe Broadman, an active member of GSA, provided some more information. “In the club we talk about what it means to be LGBT+. We talk about issues in Pascack Hills [such as the] climate towards LGBT+ people,” Broadman mentioned. “We try to help spread awareness and acceptance throughout the school. It’s fun and all-inclusive with a goal of expanding understanding and teaching acceptance.”

Also, the club is not just for people of the LGBTQ+ community. Although Freshman Mackenzie Blowers is not a member of GSA, she commented, “I think GSA is a great club, and people should join if they feel it suits them.” All students who want to discuss current topics and spread positivity throughout the school are welcome to sign up.

GSA is a phenomenal way for LGBTQ+ teens’ voices to be heard in the school. It’s a safe place not only for members of the LGBTQ+ community, but for all students who want to talk about issues and topics relating to the school and society as a whole.

“[The club] is a haven for all students to unite and advocate, educate, and socialize,” Marootian-Miller said.  “Check it out!”
