As winter break approaches, freezing temperatures come stomping in and Santa silently slides down our chimneys. Students might find themselves with nothing to do on one of their days off after the holidays. The month of December has also brought these five movies to satisfy viewers while on on their break from school.  

 

  1. Bird Box (Rated R)

Our worst nightmares have been brought to to life in this film as the world is taken over by deadly and fearful creatures. Sandra Bullock stars as the original survivor, leading her loved ones through violent settings and deadly situations. The group eventually joins forces with another group of refugees with the intention to take back their home.  The apocalyptic horrors appear on screens on Dec. 13.

 

  1. Mary Queen of Scots  (Rated R)

The year was 1569 when sisters Mary (Saoirse Ronan) and Elizabeth (Margot Robbie) were in control of Scottish and English land. The two ruled peacefully together until the jealousy and greed from surrounding sources breaks them apart. While telling the story of royalty, the movie shows the brutality of war over petty ambitions and control. The battles began on the theatre screens on Dec. 7.  

 

  1. Mary Poppins Returns (PG)

Emily Blunt will continue out the legacy of Julie Andrews in the upcoming sequel of Mary Poppins. In this 2018 remake, Poppins visits London to see her her brother and his three children. While she is there she helps them all discover a happiness they all once felt before a depression took control of their lives. Mary Poppins Returns will liven up our theatres on Dec. 19 in time for our holiday break.  

 

  1. Cold War (Rated R)

Oscar winning director Paweł Pawlikowski is about to release the newest addition to his collection of foreign films. Cold War is a black and white film about a sensitive romance between a singer and pianist in the darkest part of European history. This breathtaking movie will be released to the public on Dec. 21.  

 

  1. Aquaman (PG-13)

After the success of Black Panther and Avengers:Infinity war, Marvel Studios returns to theatres for their third film just this year. Following his appearance in the DC Comics, Aquaman will star in his own upcoming movie premiering on Dec. 21.
