You go, Glen Coco! More like, you go Tina Fey! The 2004 hit movie that we all know every line to is becoming a Broadway musical!

Yes, that’s right, Mean Girls: the Musical is actually happening. And it is going to stay pretty close to the movie’s plot, characters, and tone. Which means it’s going to be totally fetch!

Unfortunately, there is no set date to when it will actually open on Broadway. It was said that it will premiere around the Mean Girls 15th Anniversary in 2019. But it could open as late as 2027. Tina Fey wanted to adapt her creation into a musical since 2007, but plans only started emerging in 2012.

Not only is Tina Fey working on this musical, but also her husband, composer Jeff Richmond. Fun fact about Jeff Richmond: he also wrote all the music, including the catchy theme song, for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Also on the writing team is Nell Benjamin, who also wrote the music for Legally Blonde! Which means Mean Girls should be our next musical at Hills.

As for casting the musical, nothing’s set yet. For Cady, they are thinking about casting someone who is young and new to Broadway, so it is a fresh face.

Tina Fey says, “Hopefully we’ll find a young person, who, at this moment, is still in college but will be making her way to New York as we write. Still a fetus somewhere.”

Despite this, there is talk of celebrities being cast in this musical too. There are rumors that Mariah Carey might play Regina’s mom: not a regular mom – a “cool” mom. Amanda Seyfried, who played Karin in the movie, is excited for the musical and desperately wants to play Regina. It could happen, considering her connection with the story and her amazing voice.

At this moment, there are a few confirmed songs. There will definitely be a “fetch” song, and an “October 3rd” song. Regina’s mom will sing “Old Blonde Song.” We can only predict what that will be about. As for the others, Regina will have a song, Gretchen will have a song, and Damian will have a song.

Don’t worry – if you think this musical will crash and land straight in the Burn Book, you’re wrong. Tina Fey has always had this “grool” idea.

“I thought the movie in some ways mostly appealed to young girls and gay men, and I feel like that could be a recipe for success on Broadway,” Tina said.
