    The Relay For Life

Almost everyone has been touched by cancer at least once in his or her life, and many fundraisers and charities help raise money for the fight against cancer. The money is donated to research facilities, or even families who are struggling to pay the expensive medical bills. One of the most compelling and successful cancer fundraising events is the Relay for Life.

Relay for Life is a truly meaningful event that is held by the American Cancer Society every year. Communities around the United States participate in an organized walk that lasts all night long. Prior to the event, teams are made and millions of dollars are donated by the participants’ fundraising. At the event, members of each team take turns walking around the track. The event lasts all night long, and is said to mirror the difficult journey of a cancer patient. This experience is unique and emotionally touching because of the strong survivors that attend.

Many cancer survivors attend the event, each with their own story to share. Many survivors speak about their journey and the audience is always touched by their stories of struggle. In order to commemorate those who have passed from cancer, honor the survivors, and support those currently fighting, there is a special ceremony called the Luminaria ceremony. Candles are lit inside of personalized bags and placed around the track. The Luminaria ceremony is done after dark, so the glowing bags light up the track.

The Relay For Life and its components cannot be compared to any other fundraiser.
