    Tis the Season for Charities

It’s that time of year again: the season of giving, and what better way to celebrate then by donating your money and clothes to charity! Organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army are once again making it possible for citizens to give something back to the less fortunate this holiday season. Whether it is through a food, blood, or clothes drive, or simply just donating a little cash, when it comes to giving back these organizations offer many different ways to contribute.

For those who are unaware, when Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast, destroying thousands of homes and devastating hundreds of citizens, the American Red Cross responded when families were in need. They provided food and shelter for the citizens of destroyed towns.

Of course, they also are seen giving aid during other more recent disasters, including the Metro-North derailment in the Bronx that occurred this year’s Thanksgiving weekend. When this tragic event took place, American Red Cross was there to aid to the victims in need.

However, the work of the Red Cross is not only limited within the borders of the United States. When the Philippines were hit by a treacherous typhoon, the Red Cross arrived to the aftermath to aid citizens of the islands who were so desperately in need of food and shelter.

The Salvation Army also does very similar work: providing clothes, food and shelter to the less fortunate. One specific event the Salvation Army runs during the holiday season is the Christmas Castle event. Major Ivan Rock, General Secretary of the Salvation Army stated in an interview, “It’s where we bring folks who have some need to receive food, and they receive coats, and they receive toys” (Boston Herald).  Christmas Castle was an event that helped over five thousand families by providing food, coats, and toys for parents who couldn’t afford gifts to get for their kids or other family members for Christmas (Tatro).

Events such as the Christmas Castle event would be impossible without the donations of caring citizens. Both of these organizations make it possible for us to contribute to a great cause through both donating, and volunteering.  It’s the time of year to give, so make sure what’s you’re giving is going to those who need it most. Whether it is money, clothes, or food, every donation will help someone out there in need.

For more information on how you can donate or volunteer for these organizations visit redcross.org or salvationarmy.org, and decide where your donations will be headed this holiday season.
