On March 1, singer-songwriter Taylor Swift called out the show, “Ginny and Georgia” for making a sexist joke. The joke made on the show calls out Swift for the amount of men she has dated in the past.

“Ginny and Georgia” is a Netflix original series about the relationship between a 15-year-old girl and her 30-year-old mother. The show focuses on the dynamic of the mother-daughter relationship and how Ginny, the daughter, is more mature than her mother, Georgia.

In the last episode of the show’s first season, Ginny was making a comment about her mother’s love life and made the joke that “you [Georgia] go through men faster than Taylor Swift.”

Swift was offended by this because for the entirety of her career, she has been criticized for the number of people she has dated.

Swift went onto Twitter to call out the television show and Netflix. Swift wants to hold Netflix and the writers of “Ginny and Georgia” accountable for the joke because it is degrading and cancels out her hard work as a music artist. In her tweet she stated, “How about we stop degrading hard-working women . . . Happy Women’s History Month I guess.”

Swift was especially hurt by Netflix’s involvement with the joke because she made a documentary about her life with them in 2020. In the documentary “Miss Americana,” Swift focuses on her career and the criticism she has received.  It is revealed in the documentary that a great amount of the criticism she receives is about the number of people she has dated in the past. The documentary also focuses on gender inequality in the music industry. This is a contradiction from Netflix because they worked with Swift to spread awareness about gender inequality.

Many celebrities have also tweeted in support of Swift. Actress, Jameela Jamil, replied to Swift’s tweet saying, “Love.” Abby Wamback, professional women’s soccer player, also replied to Swift’s tweet, saying “ She said it. ???”

Hills sophomore and Taylor Swift fan Kaitlyn Lafferty  believes that “Taylor was right to call out the show because her past relationships are being brought up again and she is the bud of a sexist joke.”

Swift was not just frustrated by the comment made about her, but how it affects all women. Swift believes that women can do just as much as men and that women are not defined by the men in their lives. Swift was eager to speak out on this because the joke is a much bigger picture about gender inequality.
