On Feb. 12, 2026, award-winning writer and producer Ryan Murphy premiered the highly anticipated docudrama “Love Story.” Just like his other series, such as “Monster,” “American Crime Story,”and “Feud,” the show will feature individual seasons based on different cultural phenomena. “Love Story,” focuses on famous couples, and its debut season centers on John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, who married in 1996 and died in 1999.
“Love Story,” inspired by Elizabeth Beller’s book “Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy,” captures how Kennedy and Bessette fell in love, married, and faced intense scrutiny from the media. However, the show does open on the day of their tragic death from a plane crash with Kennedy at the controls.
In the prologue of the series, Carolyn, played by Sarah Pidgeon, meets her sister Lauren, played by Sydney Lemmon, and John, played by Paul Anthony Kelly, at a small airport. John, a pilot, prepares to fly them to the wedding of his cousin Rory Elizabeth Kennedy at the family compound in Hyannis Port, Mass., on Cape Cod. A lingering shot of the aircraft flying away is potent for those who know that Kennedy’s Piper Saratoga eventually crashed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.
Who are they?
Kennedy, often called the “American heartthrob,” was a 1990s icon known for his swag and way-abouts. Apart from being an infamous heir, he was a key figure in the headlines, from People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” to the “The New York Daily News’, “THE HUNK FLUNKS… AGAIN”, which was a reference to when he failed the bar exam twice before passing it in July 1990.
As for Bessette, her life, for the most part, was not in the public eye. She was born in White Plains, New York, on Jan. 7, 1966, but spent the majority of her childhood in Greenwich, Connecticut, with her mother and stepfather. She then attended Boston College, and then eventually made her way to New York City to work as a saleswoman at a Calvin Klein store. However, during overlapping time periods of her meeting Kennedy, she rose through the ranks to become the director of public relations and director of show production.
The Couples Significance
JFK Jr. had a well-known style defined by a blend of effortless high-fashion elegance and New York City practicality. An example of this was his famous pairing of suits with a backwards baseball cap while riding his bicycle through the city. However, Kennedy was not the only fashionable one in the pairing; Caroyln Bessette stood out with her classy and minimalist outfit choices. The couple as a whole captured everyone’s attention.
Their wedding plays a huge role in this fascination due to it being extremely unique and out-of-the box for this family: the couple married in secret. Their marriage was an intimate candlelit ceremony on Sept. 21, 1996, at the First African Baptist Church on Cumberland Island, Georgia. Only about 35 to 40 guests attended the ceremony, which was kept hidden from the press until after the event. Bessette wore a custom $40,000 silk, cowl-neck gown designed by Narciso Rodriguez.
The Controversy of the Series
Early behind-the-scenes photos of the cast posted by Murphy, led to a lot of complaints from critics stating that they had the style and production all wrong. This influenced Murphy to hire a new costume designer who corrected the needed adjustments. According to The New York Times, the show also received criticism from Caroline Kennedy’s son, Jack Schlossberg, who is currently running for Congress.
“I think admiration for my Uncle John is great,” Schlossberg wrote on Instagram. What I don’t think is great is profiting off of it in a grotesque way.”
After Murphy responded on a podcast that it was an “odd choice to be mad about your relative that you really don’t remember,” Schlossberg posted several memories of his uncle, including photos from Kennedy and Bessette’s wedding ceremony.
Today, the series has become a cultural phenomenon by blending 1990s heartwarming romance with devastating tragedy. It has formulated new trends such as “quiet luxury” fashion, turning basics into chic, as well as turned new faces Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Anthony Kelly into stars. They have both gained quite a following since this series was released. Overall, Murphy has tapped into a modern fascination with the 90s era of celebrity culture, making “Love Story” one of the most-watched and debated series of 2026.
