Pascack Hills High School senior Krisha Chavada was selected last month to paint a mural in the school guidance office in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The mural will depict the iconic PHHS school front while emphasizing the serenity that the guidance office aims to provide. She plans on using cool shades of blues and greens, along with elements of nature to express a sense of calmness.
Chavada is heavily involved in the art programs at Hills. She is currently enrolled in AP 2D Art and AP 3D Art. She describes her personal style as surrealist, blending realistic imagery with creative twists and fantastical subjects.

Her favorite medium is acrylic paint, and she enjoys exploring the use of different textures, lines, and motion to give a more dynamic look to her art.
Architecture and structure are also fundamental elements in most of Chavada’s art. In her acrylic pieces, she often depicts buildings with accurate dimensions and perspective. She also enjoys creating architectural models, which allow her to translate her architectural interests into a three-dimensional presentation. Looking ahead, she hopes to major in architecture in college to continue feeding her creativity past high school.
Chavada also incorporates storytelling into her work, and her works always have representation behind them. Her favorite piece is an acrylic self-portrait created for a cultural dance event.

She wanted to represent her identity as a cultural dancer, a side of her that many at school may not know. The portrait was intentionally painted in black and white to express the specific connection between dancer and audience, with only the bindi in color highlighting the importance of culture and tradition.
“I definitely see art and the design process as an integral part of my future,” Chavada said. “I think creativity helps with any skill in any field and helps you solve problems in different ways, so it is definitely something I will always be using.”
