After leading through the first three rounds of the 90th edition of The Masters, Rory McIlroy pulled away to win back-to-back green jackets. McIlroy had a two shot lead going into the last hole of the tournament. Despite his miss into the trees on the right side, McIlroy was able to fight off world number one Scottie Scheffler who was the leader in the clubhouse at eleven under par.
Coming into the final round, McIlroy was tied with reigning Players Champion, Cameron Young.
Rory held a record-breaking six stroke lead going into the weekend, but immediately destroyed his large margin after shooting 73 (one over par) and Cameron Young’s 65 (seven under par). Sam Burns, another player who was in the top five for most of the weekend, was also one of McIlroy’s chasers, along with Shane Lowry, who hit an unbelievable ace on the sixth hole during his Saturday round.
Many analysts talked about how breaking a score of 70 would most likely win them the golf tournament, but McIlroy pulled away with a score of 71 (one under par) in the Final Round. After momentum shifted early towards Young and away from McIlroy, Rory answered by shooting a 35 (one under par) on the second nine to hold off the chasers.
Rory’s win does not just earn him four and a half million dollars, it engraves him into Masters history by becoming one of four golfers to repeat as champion. He joins the likes of Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, and Nick Faldo. After another historic win from the Northern Irish man, we will be sure to see him back next year, hosting another Champions Dinner, at the center of the table of Masters champions.
