Each year, many fashion weeks occur around the world with about 36 countries having different but similar shows. These runways showcase designers’ current collections. People exchange information, opportunities, and knowledge about style for the new season. Filmmakers and photographers are involved in master classes and workshops; there are also showrooms with new styles from many brands.
Many African countries also have fashion weeks. Nigeria, for example, is home to Africa’s largest fashion week, which takes place in Lagos. In Lagos, Fashion Week is a platform that drives the African fashion industry by bringing together buyers and the media. Visual makers also have great opportunities during Lagos Fashion Week. There are after-parties, a chance for attendees to experience Lagos nightlife.
In this year’s spring/ summer collection, there was a lot of bold and ‘fluid’ fashion. This means that they are becoming more inclusive with their clothing. In Lagos, we will be seeing more maxi skirts that complement everyone. Also, there was an increase in dramatic headpieces. Headgear has always been popular within Lagos fashion and it continues to do so this season with vibrant and extravagant headbands and more.
New York Fashion Week (NYFW) occurs in the Big Apple each February and September. It shapes the trends and culture in the United States for that season. It provides designers from all over the world a platform to showcase their works. NYFW is organized by IMG. IMG (International Management Group) is a sports, fashion, and events media company based in New York City. It has about 300 shows. Fashion editors, writers, buyers, influencers, celebrities, and stylists are all on the invite list to NYFW. Widely known brands such as Michael Kors, Tory Burch, and OFF-White have had shows for NYFW.
This September we saw many new trends for the spring/summer season. Fringe is being incorporated in dresses, long maxi skirts, and even tops. There is also a variety of sheer fabrics with different styles and layering. Similar to last year, lace and silk will also be popular this upcoming spring and summer. A few bold black and white outfits were also seen in New York throughout the week.
Like New York and Lagos, Milan shows off the new designs for the upcoming season. Milan just released upcoming trends that will take over fashion this spring. These trends were all displayed at the Spring/Summer fashion week in September. Here, we saw many designer brands like Gucci and Prada. During their runway shows, they featured numerous sporty looks. These outfits include windbreakers, joggers, long coats, and track jackets.
The color butter yellow is predicted to be popular in the warmer months as well. This color was featured in monochromatic outfits. Milan nightlife fashion from the 1920s was also seen during fashion week. This means fringe, sheer fabric, and beading. Other styles such as slim-fitted trousers seem to be making a huge appearance on the runway.
Overall, these fashion weeks around the globe have a few similarities but are mostly suited to the fashion of that country. Fashion Week displays new trends for the public and provides an amazing expression opportunity for designers, photographers, and influencers.
