The South Korean drama “Squid Game,” created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, will officially be getting a second season. The show was first released on Netflix on September 17, 2021, quickly exploding into a viral sensation. “Squid Game” has already broken multiple records for the streaming service including becoming its most-watched series, and it is said to be worth roughly $900 million.

In “Squid Game,” 456 people, all in severe debt, participate in a twisted contest to win 45.6 billion won (roughly $38 million). This contest consists of six childhood games where the winners continue playing and the losers are killed. The show follows an A plot/B plot structure; the A plot focuses on the players in the death game, and the B plot focuses on a police officer infiltrating the game and investigating the people behind it.

“Squid Game” features a large cast of characters, all with unique personalities and backstories. For instance, the main character Seong Gi-hun is a gambling addict who wants to make a living to support his daughter. His childhood friend Cho Sang-woo was at the top of their class in high school, but he is too nervous to tell his mother how his academic career was ruined by the thousands he owes in debt. Kang Sae-byeok, the main female lead, is a North Korean defector who escaped to South Korea and needs money to start a new life for her and her younger brother.

As the series progresses, it manages to keep viewers engaged by presenting these evil twists on beloved childhood games, creating interesting relationships between characters, and expanding the mystery surrounding whoever is behind it all. Naturally, this set up high expectations for the conclusion to this action-packed story; who would win the contest, which characters would live or die, and who was the mastermind of the game itself?

The ending, without spoiling too much, leaves much open to the viewer’s interpretation. Many found the ending disappointing, voicing their criticisms online. Still, most fans seem to be anticipating a continuation of the story. Although Hwang originally was unsure about a sequel, he seems to have changed his opinion since then.

During an interview with the Associated Press earlier this month, Dong-hyuk was asked about the possibility of a second season. He told reporters, “There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice! But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”

Dong-hyuk went on to say that he is unsure how or when a second season will happen, but what he is sure of is that lead actor Lee Jung-jae will reprise his role as Gi-hun when that time comes. It is currently unknown which other characters may return in the second season.

As previously mentioned, the show’s cliffhanger-like ending has received criticism from many. Hopefully “Squid Game Two” can provide the closure that they have been hoping for when it comes to Netflix sometime in the coming years.

For those who haven’t watched the show yet, it’s available only on Netflix and has nine episodes. Now is the perfect time to watch it as fans await season two.
