On May 3, the Pascack Hills community came together for the World Cultures Celebration, a day dedicated to highlighting the diverse cultures on campus and around the world. Presenting this annual event, formerly called International Day, were members of the Student Immigrant Alliance (SIA), Asian Culture Club (ACC), Latin and Hispanic Culture Club (LHCC), World Culture Club (WCC), Jewish Student Union (JSU), and Muslim Student Association (MSA).

The event was a success, taking place in both courtyards and the amphitheater at Hills during designated time slots throughout the day. Each participating club showcased a wide variety of foods from their own cultures and gave out free samples to students. Some cuisines included empanadas and tacos by LHCC, various ramen styles and Asian snacks from ACC, falafel sandwiches and baked goods from JSU, European potatoes and cheese pierogi from WCC, and donuts and Chick-fil-A nuggets from SIA.

Students were also immersed in several cultural activities that included henna designs, arts and crafts, games, and a photo booth. The SIA also featured a large map in the amphitheater where students and staff were able to put stickers on the places of their heritage.

It was super fun, and I enjoyed being able to share my creativity and culture with other people

— Hills sophomore Krisha Chavada

During this event, Hills students were invited to watch a special performance brought by the preschoolers under the instruction of Melissa Szabo, Jane Conboy, and their high school buddies. Their songs included a French piece, encapsulating the spirit of the celebration.

Members of the culture clubs at Hills and students who participated in the celebration commented on the event.

“I had a blast and got to try many new foods and experience a lot of different cultures,” said sophomore Eva Friedman, who watched the event unfold.

“It was super fun, and I enjoyed being able to share my creativity and culture with other people,” said sophomore Krisha Chavada, a member of the Asian Culture Club.
